Free meals controversial in Korea

 

 It is now emerging as an important topic in South Korea is a free meal. Previously, children were placed in economically difficult home circumstances, such as basic living of pensioners only selective welfare system serving free meals.But free meals is suggesting converted to universal welfare system that provides services to all students.
  Of course, the conservatives no choice but to oppose them. Because the pendulum to have to pay more taxes for universal welfare. And when free meals are enforced to emphasize the more general welfare, housing, etc. it is because you want to emphasize the universal well-being in a variety of areas. Current government to extend the reduction to our policy, compared the welfare budget in front of the government also shows the opposition to all ruling parties to spread the conservative policy.

 Therefore, in the conservative camp, to advance camp to claim a free lunch, it is criticized that it is populist idea to win the election.
  In contrast, progressives, we favor the free meals.
Now the problem with a different education budget funded from a lack of financial resources but, If ultimately securing funding through the tax argue that the human right to enjoy a meal without looking noticed that all the children equally.

 The problem is that eventually claims all people to switch from the cradle to the general welfare of enjoying a decent living life to the grave all is well, "Welfare disease" wasted the whole country by the finances of the country due to the opposition of the claim will be destroyed.

 The weak social welfare system in Korea,

I think I do not if you look at simply confrontation of political philosophy of maintaining the population and progress camp the problem of free meals. Free meals discussions, free meals should be itself and not simply discuss all the people involved about the direction of our country's welfare policy.
  But I think, the welfare system is worried about the "welfare disease" in South Korea there is no need to worry about "welfare disease" too insufficient, is the point is the same like maggots fear, will not dip chapter.

  But poverty is different. Poverty is called "a little uncomfortable, but it is wrong ', but only the poor people in capitalist society is very difficult. In particular, the story had committed suicide by poverty pessimistic these days, it can be seen not just a personal problem. Korea's welfare systems

In 'Invitation to sociology' class, I learned about 'culture'. Cultur
e is a really interesting topic. Particularly, I was interested in the 'brand'. Brand has the essential value in our lives. When we buy the goods, we consider the brand that fit to us.

My thought (Korean youth culture)

 The most famous brands in the korean youth culture(subculture) is a 'THE NORTH FACE'. Perhaps, some people will not wear this brand, not those who do not know the brand. In youth culture,

their mimic psychology is strong. So, they are going to be based on act of other people. In this way, young people wear a lot of uniform and fashionable brand. If brand to create a group together with favorite person each other, there is the advantage that it is possible to inform the brand to others.  On the other hand, unfortunately, people who did not enter the favorite group of brand can feel a sense of alienation. Thus, the brand is a necessity in our lives.

In the past, Tuberculosis was very dangerous disease. This disease is an infectious disease that claimed the most lives in the history of mankind. Infected people thought they get punished from god. They didn`t know tuberculosis. In the current, tuberculosis can be quickly treated.

 

Nowadays People feel awe from mers corona virus(MERS-CoV). This virous causes fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc. However it is much more dangerous than just a cold. 40% of people who infected with the mers virus have died. This virus appeared in korea. 15 South Koreans were infected until now. This virus will spread gradually. I think that this can be like ebola virus. It seems to be a pretty big incident. There are Movies-themed virus which people feel fear from. This movie is "감기(The flu)" that released 2013. I came up with bad idea. Korea seems to be like a movie by mers virus.

 

Actually, The mid-14th century, the Black Death spreaded in Europe. Many people died. Cities that a lot of people crowded suffered first blow. Damage range has grown exponentially. Eventually europe society collapsed.

Slavery is a legal or economic system under which people are treated as property. Slaves were bought and sold. Slaves can be held from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work or to demand compensation. In the past, people thought slave to implement not as human. In Kant's perspective, this is not right morally. People should change this think. slave is also human. They must have right to refuse to work or to demand compensation.

Why is the slavery exist?
Slave`s role related with hard labor. People of higher tier needed someone to do labor instead of them. So they captured or purchased slaves and made slavery for own convenience.

Should there be a slave?
I thinks that slavery should not exist. Without compensation, slaves work all days during lifetime. Slave is also human. They must have right to refuse to work or to demand compensation.

Few days ago, I read our school newspaper. In there, I saw this article.

Particularly, department of liberal arts, social science, and fine arts have a high possibility of sacrificing. however, we must comtemplate the school's position. Hanyang university is private university, so it has to consider a profitability. we can't shift the blame for reducing the department that unfavorable at reputation or employment rate onto university authority.

 

 

To being a world-famous and research-oriented university, graduate school must be developed. Lee said, "reducing the undergraduate course can make graduate course reinforced and help our school being a research-oriented university." Meanwhile, Kim said, "many index like power elite postering index, can be influenced if we don't reform the structure of our school"

 

Demanding to media to remain politically neutral is not always right and cannot. However, Their tone of an argument is highly partial.  Newspaper has one-side bargain in government's university reformation. 'it's difficult to be chosen in capital attracting if school disapproves of government's reformation policy.' is Hanyang newspaper's attitude. They don't have any intention to listen the contrary views. In addition, when opponents said 'only pure academic course like liberal arts or fine arts will be sacrificed unilaterally.', school authority and paper announced that  appraisal standards which decides the number of reducing students or merging department are relatively fair. I think it means that department which falls short of the standards will be reduced. Features of the department are not important.

 

Kun Kook univ. and Choong Ang univ. are very unroarious because of authorities' one-sided reformation.

 

 

In my opinion, tertiary education's primary purpose is not making student empolyed or obtaining profits. 'Education' must be student-oriented, not business-oriented. Especially, university must give a quality education which makes student critical and creative. Employment is not the main role of the university. some educator said, 'education must be progressive to make student thinking critically, and be conservative to told the society's important moral rule.' I extremely argree.

Does ability-improving technology is alright?-Cho Sung-an(조성안)

In these days, some technology that curing decease is used for improving human's ability. For example, a drug called ritalin is made for curing ADHD(Attention Dificit Hyperactivity Disorder). But it's used for not only curing ADHD but also for improving brain ability.

 There are two conflicting opinion about this phenomenon.

 One is positive for this,and the other side is negative for this.

 In positive opinion, there are no boundary of curing and improving. That means there are no boundary of normal and abnormal. And about ability-improving, there are just slow improvement and fast improvement. So improving ability with modern technology is not bad. Also, this kind of technology is benefitial to individual and society. By improving human ability, that improved person can live happier life and in society, there will be lots of development of culture,economy,politics and many other parts.

 In negative opinion, stability is one of the concerend thing. Usually with this kind if technology, there can be deadly side effects. Sometimes, its side effect will be very dangerous to some other function of our body. And inequality would be caused by this. People that too poor to take advantage of this technology will be discriminated by other people that benefited by this. Also there can be identity confusion caused by this. Even if benefited by this, there can be question like "Is this ability is really mine?". And this phenomenon will lead people to addiction.

First, we watched a video about modern slavery. I was surprised because I didn’t know there could be slavery in modern days. But still there are lots of exploited children. And evidently, there are exploited children in Korea too. Some people use children’s workforce in salt pond. I was little bit embarrassed because I didn’t know anything about these cases. Just like the man in the video said, we could help the children by not drinking coffee after lunch and by not buying one pair of jeans. I think it is worth doing those things to help the exploited children and to exterminate slavery. 

After we discussed about video, we learn family and kinship. Kinship is the web of social relationships that form an important part of the lives of most humans in most societies. Also kinship refers to relationships between individuals bonded by blood ties and marriage. So from this we could know family means a group of people affiliated by kinship. And then we had second discussion about marriage. The topic was “What are the marriage rules in Korea? And how have they changed?” First, the meaning of marriage has changed. In the old days, the meaning of marriage was workforce but nowadays the meaning of marriage is more likely to stay with loved one. Also in the old days marriage age was very young. For example, our grandmother generation married when they were 17. But today most women marry when they are 30 or even older. And nowadays people think marriage is not necessary thing to do.

In the past, most of marriage was decided to the decision of the parents without opinions of the person directly involved. And the age of the some wife was more than husband`s age. It has changed in the past and now really it is more. Of particular relevance to women, there are many things that women's human rights has changed in response to the of respect. However, more women are not anything anyone even if the young men and marriage than my age now.Of course, as is the word older younger couple, not the fact that still more than women age between the couple are accustomed to Korean. Women who divorced in second was impossible to marry other men. Even widowed, rather than the other person, it was a woman that has been devoted to her husband lifetime. In the third, it was different in each era, women after marriage I was living on most people's house.​

We learn about social relationshop and kinship last class. After class, I can understand how important family is. We can call family a Social Molecule.

Individual humans are atoms. They works like real atoms do. Human constitutes society and without society, human can't survive. Like real atom, human is the smallest part of the society and it helps society alive. As social atom(human) exists, social molecule exists too. 

Two people get married, they become a family. and the family is a social molecule. Family, social molecule does many things for society. It helps society's population grow. If the population is not supplied, society will be full of old people and society will be screwed. And it take part of economic function. Father earns money to support his family. This helps society's industry runs well and it constantly powering society, nation. 

Looking family as a social molecule, I can sense how important marriage and family is. It does lot of thing for society and it also helps children to get into society. The marriage law in Korea is similar to other country’s laws. The couple have to communize their property, living place, etc. But they can change these depending on the circumstance of the two people. Different with America, where the wife has to change her first name to match her husbands’ first name At Korea wife do not have to change her first name. Also, at the past at Korea the property was owned by both wife and husband or totally to husband. But today, the property of the husband and wife is each separately owned.

 

 

How is the labor divided by gender in Korea?

 

 Korea has serious problem about the ‘double burden’. It seems to be an international problem, but because of the religious belief Koreans used to have about gender roles, things are more serious here in Korea. It was believed that man must not go into the Kitchen. This had no problem when almost no woman worked outside. But now many woman work after the birth of the child. As a result, many woman became a “super mom” who does work and house work at the same time.

The social recognition started confucianism.
Confucianism think that the man's right is more important than woman's right in society.

 Family is a basic form of society.  Family is group of married couple and kinship. In the past, agricultural society, children was a workforce.
 Because people did farming, and farming was livelihood. So they need many force to farming, also they used children by workforce. As a result, they gave birth to many children.
However, todays, the society changed to industrial from agricultural. Only the professional farmer did farming. The family didn't use the children by workforce any more. Parents used money to educate their children. So birth rate decreased. Moreover, present society recorded very low birth rate.

Modern society doesn't use the children by workforce, but developing country is still use the children to produce manufactured goods, specially light industry, for example cloth, shoes. So developing country's birth rate is high than advanced country.

This week I watched TED(How to combat modern slavery -Kevin Bales) about modern slavery. In that movie the Kevin said that there are millions of slaves in the world today. Actually there are a lot of people who have been exploited by employee like slave today. Kevin said that modern slavery is economic crime and it must be disappeared.

Then what is Modern Slavery? Modern slavery refers to the institutions of slavery that continue to exist in the present day. Estimates of the number of slaves today range from around 2 million. Modern slaves can be an attractive because slave holders just need to pay for sustenance and enforcement.

I like Nike's sports brand like clothes, sports bag and shoes. Some time I heard that there are many children who have been exploited in Nike's factory. They have overworked and gotten a little wage. Nike's clothes and shoes are not very cheap but quite expensive. Although price is quite high, the children in factory can get a little wage. Also I like to drink coffee. Workers in african coffee farms have also been exploited. Although a cup of coffee's price is quite high (Franchise cafes sell americano at \4000), it's cost price is very cheap and price that return to coffee farm workers is cheaper than cost price.

It is wrong that people who enough worked can't get proper wage. Thus we should think about them when before buy something and make an effort to disappear modern slavery.

In the past, marriage rule in Korea is focused on men. Everything is focused on men. Women should live men's family house. Also relation with men's family and women's family is very important. If man and woman love each other but their family deny their marriage, they can't marry. And women can't marriage again. Finally marriage rule is very complicated and formal. But these days, marriage rule in Korea is changed. In short, marriage rule in korea change to western style. Women need not live men's family house. Love and economic power are the most important thing in Korean marriage rule. Also complex and formal marriage rule  need not these days. These days we can unconventional and simple marriage.

Modern slaves

I think modern slaves are us. But the more important thing is WE DON'T KNOW WE ARE SLAVES. Authoritative people tyrannize weak people. Already social structure is setted by authoritative people. Authoritative people want to keep their authority. So they enslave us by their authority. Sadly we not against this irrational structure. We just adapt this structure because we know that we can't win authoritative people.

In this week, our class learned about ' Family, Kinship and Relationships'. It was very interesting because I thought my family. I could know the term 'Family' is not simple but so complex word. So, I decided to post this week's main topic.

  According to my above posting, marriage rules is rules that may restrict marriages to certain groups or express preference. Today, marriage is more free than past in Korea.


  For exampele,
  First, in past, low caste people couldn't marrry with high caste people. Although they wanted to marry with the person who dont't have similar caste with them, their parents desperately opposed. But, today, people can marry with the people who they love so much regardless of caste. Also, their own opinions are more important than their parents' opinions when they decide their marriage.


  Second, Korean people can have with only one wife or husband in not only today but also past. But, in past, women can't marry again with other people. In constrat, today, all people(women and men) can marry again with other people.

Why is terrorism dangerous?-Cho Sung-an(조성안)

 We discussed about terrorism and civil war. And we talked about reason why terrorism is dangerous.


In many reason of people dying,terrorism has really small rate. But most of people think that terrorism is more dangerous than any other reasons(Just like illness,accient).


 One of the reason of this thinking would be objective of terrorism. Terrorists usually does thier terror against many thinngs. Government policy,social system,economic reason,or relligion...etc. So it has clear target. For this reason, it is considered dangerous.

 Another reason is its intentionality. It has target, so it means it's always done deliberately. Accidents or deceases are not intended. But terrorism is intended. So this is another reason.

 INTRO

 At lecture i saw a short TED video. At this vid, the professor explained  there are a lot of slaves even in this modern society. This is hard to understand at the first time but after listening to his explanation i totally understood what is happening. It is unjust and demoral to overlook slavery. This is the most inhumane thing. It violates the fundamental human rights. He insisted that we should not overlook this phenomenon. This happens because of stratification of wealth. The people who became slave didn't realize they are going to be a slave at the first time. they need money so they are trying to get a job to feed their family. They can easily ripped off by fraud who is slave owner but disguised as a job giver. This problem can be solved only if we focus and participate on this phenomenon.

MY OPINION

 I think the definition of slavery is people who work hard but don't get reasonable reward. As using this definition i can say that there is a slavery in korea too. This phenomenon is called
"PASSION PAY"  This is done by many big companies and broadcasting comapanies. They use college students for their comapany but they don't give them enough pay. Because they think they gave students opportunity to work at dream job. This is called Passion pay. they think they got passion as a reward. This is big problem which is very similar to slavery. capital class is exploiting weak class(students who want to get a job). This problem has to be solved.

  This week I learned global phenomena & family, kinship and relationships. We saw the ted about modern slavery. Kevin Bales,person in the video,claims that slavery still exist until mordern times. He said that he's mission is to end all forms of human slavery within the next 25 years. I will post my opinion post's beneath. And we discussion Korea marriage. First time, I wondered why we learn family, kinship and relationships. But I understand sociologists often use the word kinship when discussig family. And kinship is the network of social relationships that form an important part of  the lives of humans in the society.

 I think also that mordern times slavery still exist. I agree Kevin Bales that the more whole number of population, the more vulnerable class appear. In other words, as the population increases, is not rich people turn up the world but increase the poor people. Becuase the world's resourse very limit, but every people want almost same thing such as food, house, jewel and so on. So mordern times the rich people underpay and sweat thier's workers, these phenomenons mean mordern times slavery still exist.

 

 

 

Topic 2 : What are the marriage rule in Korea? How have they changed?

Unconditionally, both groom and bride meet mutual parents. The past parents power about thier offersprings marriage very strong. So parents think that groom or bride is unsatisfactory, thier could discontinue marriage. But today these case uncommon. Photo of the side is Korea traditional weddig ceremony. These weddig ceremony also exceptional ceremony today. Today Korea weddig the greater part Western style.

Q. How to combat modern slavery?

We watched video for discussion. It was about modern slavery. The speaker said that slavery is practiced in many countries and there are businesses based on human slavery accordingly. It is not about the past. This is what happens at present. He said we have to end all human slavery and told how we free today's slaves. He thinks we can help to end modern slavery by reducing our consumption. For example, one way is to reduce the number of buying coffee or watching the movie at the cinema or going shopping.

According to his opinion, the poor become slaves because they need a job. Poverty is one of the causes of modern slavery. I think another cause is the poor legal system. I agreed with the speaker but I want to add something more. I think we can act if we know. First, we have to become truly aware of its existence of modern slavery.

Before watching the video, I didn't know from nothing that there is modern slavery. I thought slavery has been abolished. Through that video, I got to know that there are many slaves in many countries. And I realized specifically that I can help to end modern slavery by reducing consumption. Like this, first of all, it is important to become truly aware of its existence of modern slavery. So we can act what we have to do.

Intro

 Usually, I was interested in 'Global warming'. In today, discussion of global warming is hot issue. In particular, I focused on two aspects about global warming. It is whether to view natural phenomena of the global warming or to view the product that has been destroyed by human beings. Then, I will write my thoughts about the global warming.

 Always, Earth is slowly changing. Earth has risen 4 degrees since the industrial revolution. Can these indicators be ignored? The answer is 'No'. Scientists anticipate in the current state the average temperature for the next 100 years, to rise 6 degrees than now. Subjective predictions of scientists is clearly shown  also in objective, actual cases. For example, Korea typically has four distinct seasons. According to temperature rise, the citrus that only been cultivated in warm regions like the south has been cultivated in the north. Another example is Halla mountain vegetation distribution. As the temperature rises, vertical boundary of Halla mountain is ambiguous. Therefore, unique natural environment is destroyed. Such a case tells us that global warming is serious.
However, some of the scientists and climatologists may be criticized that global warming is in progress. They argue that it(global warming) is a temporary natural phenomenon. In this way, in today, both of the opinion of global warming are antagonistic.
 Thus, because of human senseless development of today`s earth, earth has become more and more hot. We are accustomed to disasters such as drought, heat. So, we do not accurately recognize the global warming. Thus, without further destruction of the earth, we must make a realistic measures to maintain the earth.

Family, kinship and relationship -Yeon Ju, Heo (허연주)

Last class, we learned about family, kinship and relationship. I didn’t know the difference between family and kinship before this class. But now I know. Kinship is a type of relationship and family is a group of people bonded by specific relationship. In this class, we also learned about marriage, divorce, patriarchy, etc. and we discuss about Korean marriage rules.

 

 

Q. What are the marriage rule in Korea? How have they chaged?

 

Korean traditional marriage

In the past, Korean marriage proceeded by the bride and groom’s parents. Parents got involved in their offspring’s marriage. Sometimes parents promised their offspring’s marriage without their offspring’s agreement. Accordingly, there were some cases that the bride and groom didn’t know each other. Marriage mostly was enacted to carry on a family line. Bridal age was very young. The bride and groom wore a hanbok (Korean traditional clothes).

 

Modern marriage clothes

Nowadays, many parts were changed. Parental intervention reduced and marriage that followed the offspring’s opinion increased. People marriage to share their life with a lover. The age at marriage get higher because people want to marry after their economic condition become stable. Marriage procedure has been streamlined. The bride and groom wore tuxedo and wedding dress.

 

 

Like other cultures, marriage also changes according to the passing of time. I think that the meaning of marriage became weak. Celibate increase and media report divorce of celebrities and extensible a divorce rate. I am regrettable. Because in the tough world, family value is more needed and marriage is the base of the family. I hope marriage becomes more positive and preferable thing.

Intro

 This week, I learned about 'Kinship'. Particularly, I was interested in 'Rules of marriage'. Korea is under the influence of the past Confucianism, marriage is a very important custom to accomplish the kinship, family. Marriage custom of the past and present would be really the same? The answer will be 'No'. Then, let`s examine in detail about marriage customs.

 In the past, there was a procedure of diverse and complex marriage custom. In order to marriage, parental consent was absolutely necessary. So, their intention was not so much reflect. In addition, there was a marriage system that can not remarry when one men and women of someone die.

 On the other hand, in today, marriage proceedings  have been simplified than in the past. Parental consent is absolutely required elements, but less important than in the past. Rather, it has many cases to get married by respecting the will of between men and women. Also, although someone die, there is a law that can be married again.

 However, in today, marriage has become easy, so divorce is rapidly increasing. In order to overcome these divorces, serious love between men and women, and the correct recognition about marriage would be necessary.
