Conflict -Yeon Ju, Heo 허연주

Last class, we learned about conflict. Conflict is occurred by the contradiction of ‘relation of gain and loss’ and inequality. It can lead to war, civil war, revolution and terrorism. It may be that this is a natural occurrence. But I think, especially terrorism cannot be justified by any reason.

Q. Why is terrorism seen as such a danger, if so few people have been affected by it?

Many people remember the September 11 attacks called 911 terror. It was very abject and tragic incident. 2,996 innocent people died. U.S. stocks lost $1.4 trillion in valuation for the week and U.S. government spent huge amounts of money to restore destroyed things. In this case, we can find danger of terrorism.

The first danger is that innocent people were sacrificed. Victims were not related to direct reason of terrorism. Whether the number of victims are more or less, sacrifice of innocent people should not happen. And we should consider the possibility we could be sacrificed by terrorism.

Another danger is that terrorism leads to enormous economic loss. Terrorism always accompanies force like bomb, chemical weapons, etc. And it harms buildings as well as people. Buildings are destroyed and huge amounts of money are spent. Also, anxiety about the additional terrorism danger leads to decrease of credibility and monetary value is decreased. In small country, it may cause economic collapse.

Conflict has been becoming reason of various incidents.  But its solution must be rational and non-violent thing rather than terrorism. As mentioned earlier, terrorism cannot be justified by any reason. Its danger is not simple. People must recognize that terrorism is social big issue. I hope terrorism did not happen.

  1. Topic: why is terrorism seen as such a danger, if so few people have been affected by it?

Terrorism is seen as a danger and everyone is afraid of it despite the fact that the substantial victim is few, because of the unintentional characteristic of terrorism. Other crimes can be unintentional too, but unlike usuall crimes that is not objected to be unexpected, terrorism is a crime that has an objection of being unexpected. The terrorist does his/her best to make it an secret, and the crime is usually headed to many, and unexpected people. Other crimes, the victims are people who has some reasons of being an victim of a crime. They may did something wrong, etc. But terror is headed for unexpected people. The victim can be anyone who is living. And it can happen in unexpected places, like in school or company, where nobody expectes crime. So people cannot get free of the problem.

  2. I also think terrorism cannot be justified by any reason. Because by terrorism innocent people could die or hurt without knowing reason. There should be less violent solution.
