Why people protest? -by 김영재 (Kim Yeong Jae)

Why people protest?

This week, I studied about social movement. Social movements are a type of group action. They are large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues. In other words, they carry out, resist or undo a social change. Protest is one kind of social movement. We can see protest easily today. Then why people protest?

I think that, people commonly protest because of limited resources. People want to have many resources (not only money but services, welfare and conveniences also) but resources are limited. And government decides how to share people's welfare and conveniences. So, if people get small amount of resources, they will complain to the government. However they can't complain to president or politicians directly, because they don't have power and status. So people go out into the street and make crowd and protest so that president or politicians can know people have complaint.

Limited resources are not only reason of protest. People also protest because of government's wrong policy. For example, when korean governments signed a Free Trade Agreement(FTA) with america people had a complaint so they went out and protested. Like that if people have a complaint about government's policy, they will protest so that make government modify a wrong policy.
