Some
of the issues that modern Korean social movements are concerned about
Recently the chairman of the board of the
University Jungang got into controversy because of his sex discrimination comment.
Talking about the entrance paragon of the school, he said Jungang University
should pick more male students who can give contribution to the school
foundation after graduation, instead of “powder puffing girls”. After this
comment was known to people, many social movements related to woman rights
opposed about this comment; for example the “Korean National Council of Women”,
Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center”, etc. They did a performance named “The angry
Puffing” in front of Jungang University.
Secondly, People who are concerned about the
corruption related to “Sewol ship disaster” made a movement at GwangHwaMon. The
protesters are moving because of the complaint they are having to the
government about the disaster. They don’t like the way the government handled
about the problems related to the disaster. For example, the ship that was sink
in the ocean was not refloated from the water. Not for only this, people from
the movement wanted to know why the disaster happened. At first the movement
was supposed to be a non-violent movement, but it ended up with a lot of
violence involved to it.
