Social movements - Yeon ju, Heo (허연주)

Last class, we learned about social movement. At first when I heard about social movements, I thought that social movement equate to movement of hierarchy. But social movement was not movement of hierarchy. Social movement is individual or collective movement to lead various changes.

Q. What are some of the issues that modern Korea social movements are concerned about?

Korea social movement is concerned about social problems. These problems are various things like politics, welfare, life, etc. Trough social movement, people unite other people and assert their demand. But it is not all. Sometimes, social movement is occurred to commemorate like assembly to commemorate the memory of sewol ferry.

Q. Why people protest?

If people remain motionless, they cannot get anything. So they speak louder and participate in a social movement to protest unreasonable things. Forms of protest are various. There are passive form like posting on SNS, active and collective form like participating assembly, individual form like one-man protest.

If social movements are non-violent and peaceful resistance to unreasonable things, that is a good social phenomenon. That kind of movement changes out life and solve social problems.

+) Last class on Monday, our electricity failed. We discussed about the importance of electricity. The professor brought chocolate and distributed for us. It was a very interested experience.
