We thought nurse and doctor. From old times, generally nurse is a woman and doctor is a man. Nowadays this tendency is changing gradually, but that is still the same. My friend majoring in the Department of Nursing is the sole man in his department. Nurse have kind and gentle image and doctor have level-headed and rational image. This image contributes in that fixed symbol.

At first I think that is because social demand. From old times, society demands caring home and passive behavior for women. The woman just did housework and cared their home. So, they haven't needed to go college. Contrastively man worked outside of home for their family. Going to college is of help to their work, so man enrolled in college. But I think that is the story of the past. Nowadays, many women enroll in college/university. Only has to look at our department, the gender ratio is almost same. Many men and women require a university degree for their desired job, so sometimes the gender ratio enrolling college/university will equal.

  1. The legal changes improving the situation of women in South Korea in the past 30 years

In the past, women was very unequally treated by the society. But after the Miracle of Han River, it has changed a lot. But, Korea still have inequality. After becoming independent from Japan, Korea was established as a liberal democracy. Because it is a democratic country, woman could ask for educational rights feely. At the past, it was not usual for a woman to have education. Also clear define of rape and punishment of the assailant became possible. This is a big change because at the past there was not clear rules that define about rape, and Korea used to fault the victim (woman) about the crime, instead of the assailant. Recently, South Korea's first female president, Park Geun-Hye promised to promote a “women’s revolution” and provide support for child care, increase opportunities for promotion, and salary equality, and other things to accelerate women’s employment and provide support for female workers, to increase woman’s assess to educational opportunities and accelerate woman’s participation on social activities. But these policy is not being distinctly made.

People use the word ‘true woman’ or ‘true man’ to describe people who are in the case of woman: good at cooking, sewing, quiet, or polite/ man: strong, tough, good at sport. These words make image of what a girl/boy must be like and make the person who is listening to the word to have stress of not being matched to the criteria.
