lecture review [Government] 이인재 Lee In Jae

Topic 1. Would you like to have more say in the political decision making ?

When political decision making, I think that people should more concentrate on political decision process. But the most important thing in political decision is depending on politician. They must gather the opinions of people and then decide political decision. I have many doubt whether rich politician can understand poor people. They need listen the real voice of people, not formal statistics data. Politicians must not seek their own profit. And they must not suggest populism. I sincerely hope politicians not work for their own profit but work for nation. Not regard political decision as means. Political decision is end.

Topic 2. Is modern democracy really 'the will of the people ?'

I think this question is not easy. I think that modern democracy is not the will of people. I think Modern democracy is unavoidable decision. Modern democracy is representative democracy form. We can't live life only focus on politic. We must make money and enjoy our spare time. So people need the way that assign politics someone and focus on their life. This way is both collectively and individually efficient. And the country in which many people live needs efficiency in economy.
As a result, I think that modern democracy is not the will of people but the unavoidable decision.

Topic 3. How would you like the government of the future to look and work ?

I think that government of the future will change by technology. I think that the government will gather the opinion of the people easily. Also role of the government will be reduced. Because vote of political decision will be easier than before by development of technology. For example simple fingerprint, and convenient electronic vote system will simplify procedures. In that case, simplification help increase voting and most people participate in political decisions so they can immediate feedback to government.

  1. You think that modern democracy is not the will of people but the unavoidable decision. I agree partly. Nowadays the democracy is a main flow so many countries say no to authoritarianism and go for democracy in modern times. Although that is true I think still modern democracy is based on the will of people. I think the inevitable flow to democracy is also led by people’s will. They want to live equally so they claim a right and expose the irrationality of politics. The fact that they affirm democracy and accept that system means that modern democracy is the will of people.
About topic 3, I think the government and politicians of the future must listen to the people’s voice. Phenomena such as a poor turnout and political apathy are not just voters’ fault. Those can be related to political corruption or difficulty in participation procedure. The government should listen their opinions and set up appropriate systems that enable people to take part in politics easily. I think convenient electronic vote system which you mention will be helpful to simplify procedures. That’s a good idea.
