What is Sociology 7 - 안지영 (An Ji Young)

First, social cohesion is bonds that bring together in given society. And socialization and social control contribute to social cohesion and social integration. To add explanation to this, socialization means learning value, technology, and knowledge that is necessary for social life by doing interaction with member of society. For example, people learn to see themselves as a part of society, we also learn how to role-play-act in certain situation, how to read symbols, and how to read and display emotions. At this part we had two short discussion.

First topic was "Color pink is associated with girl, why?" Pink was rather associated with boys at 19th century. Because pink is energetic and dynamic color. On the other hand at 19th century girls wore blue clothes because blue is delicate and elegant color. From here we could know the sentence "Pink is girlish color and blue is boyish color." is prejudice. And this prejudice is represented at the mid-80s. Because in the mid-80s which was an economic boom wealthy parents knew babies' sex beforehand and bought pile of their babies' clothes. And manufacturers used color for barrier so that they couldn't hand clothes down. So the sentence "Pink is only girl's color." is just a prejudice.

And our second topic was "Can we think of other ways the society tells us how different things are expected from boys and girls?" About toy, commonly people think boy like car and robot but girl like pretty doll. And in the book which children read most of main characters are boys. Also like our first topic boys are expected to wear clothes of blue color and girls are expected to wear clothes of pink color.

  1. I think your examples are great. Adding to your example, not only in books children read, in most movies and books adults see the main character is men. And the society expect girls to like cooking, nursing, and boys to like math.
