This week, we learned about "Government". We think that Government is familiar whereas government is difficult. Political systems are organized around coercive, symbolic, administrative, incentive bases of power in society. Coercion is the ultimate basis of the power of the state. Symbolic systems used to reinforce coercion. Democracy consists of representative democracy, liberal democracy, direct democracy.
Is modern democracy really "the will of the people"?
I think that modern democracy is "the will of the people". The term Democracy comes from Greek "demokratia", "the rule of the people". Also, democracy defines the mean that all eligible citizens have equal right to say in the decision that affect their lives. Modern democracy is representative democracy. In representative democracy, we can vote in elections. That is, eligible citizens can vote to say in the decision that affect their lives. We don't say directly but we say something to say through vote. (picture-http://news.naver.com/main/read.nhn?mode=LSD&mid=sec&sid1=100&oid=003&aid=0000091569)
Would you like to have more say in the political decision making?
I want to tell about political decision making process. In Korea, political decision making is made by politician, members of the National Assembly. That is, we nation don't participate in decision making process. If that is the case, we follow the decision making? I don't know that. Politician need to listen nation's voice. I think that in political decision making politician must reflect not only high-ranking officials but also public opinion.
I also think democracy is the will of the people. Before democracy is recognized naturally there was dictatorship. But as resist to dictatorship increase, it is people that made democracy naturally. And I also think vote is one of the evidence that support this perspective.
ReplyDeleteI agree it would be wonderful if the public gave an opinion to the political decision making, but things might not work so well in reality. The public is not always smart and rational. There could be some people in the public who know well about politics and make rational decisions. But unfortunately there would be more people who knows nothing about politics and is not interested at all. These people will make poor decisions, and the important decisions could be made by the ignorant majority.
