1. Introduction
In this week’s lecture, we learned about elements of social organization in sociological perspective. In the first class of this week, we learned about “social interaction” through sociological lenses. On the next day, we looked into “socialization and social control.”
Personally, questions about socialization and social control were so interesting for me. In class, we discuss some questions about how we are socialized into gender roles.
2. My opinion of the question
Q. Can we think of other ways the society tells us how different things are expected from boys and girls?
We socialize through observation of others and interaction with them. Families and schools play a major role in socialization of an individual. we can see the society the society tells us how different things are expected from boys and girls through toy. Maybe all of us have a memory about playing with the toys in our childhood. Many parents buy a toy for their son such as toy car, toy train, toy robot. However, for their daughter, they buy cuddly and soft toy such as teddy bear or pretty doll.
There is another example, games. There are, of course, many online games for anyone to enjoy, regardless of gender. But there are also some online games that target specific game users. In general, boys enjoy playing a violent shooting combat game where the characters use guns and other weapons. Starcraft is a good example. They also like to paly a racing video game like Cartrider. They play such a game and internalize the maleness. On the other hand, girls mostly play game related to dressing their dolls. In addition, girls also play jump rope outside, whereas boys paly games like football and baseball. In doing so, girls learn femininity and sensitivity of female. They internalize social convention that women should be modest.
If a boy prefer playing with doll to playing with toy car, people was looking at him in a very strange way as if he were wrong.
Like most of socialization, the socialization through toy or game is not conscious. We just learn gender roles unconsciously from an infant in this way.
