Stratification _Yeon ju, Heo (허연주)

Last class, we learned two kinds of stratification. One is economic stratification and the other is racial and ethnic stratification. Stratification is structuralization of society and it is structured by wealth, power, prestige. In economic stratification, economic class is divided by wealth and poverty. Racial and ethnic stratification is divided by primarily social part rather than biological part.

[Should Korean government do more to reduce poverty and promote equality?]

We could see economic stratification through pyramid model. A small number of people are located in the top of pyramid and a large number of people are located in the bottom of the pyramid. People on top of the pyramid have more and more wealth than the bottom of the pyramid. It is a bad economic stratification model. People on the bottom of the pyramid are relatively more and more poor because people on the top of the pyramid gain property through their owned property. It leads to economic instability. It is the same in any country. So Korean government do more to reduce property and promote equality.

[What is the function of stratification?]

In the above answer, stratification may seem a bad thing, but it is not. Stratification contributes social evolution. People in high class try to keep their status, wealth and power. And people in low class try to rise to high class and get status, wealth and power. In this process, people struggle with other people, society and themselves. It leads to personal and social evolution.

While learning about stratification, I thought I am in the lower-middle class. Because I have not enough money and knowledge. It seems a sad matter. So I thought that I will try harder and harder to rise higher class. It seems like a very ideal think, but I want everyone have more wealth and live well.

  1. I agree that stratification has good sides like the one you mentioned; causing evolution by making people compete with each other. But concluding that stratification has no bad sides is dangerous. Overheated competition will bring inhumane actions happening. So it is important to be aware that stratification can get wrong and to keep balance of it.
