What is Sociology 8 - 안지영 (Ji Young An)

Racial and ethnic stratification

First, ethnicity is a socially defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience. And race is category which classify human being according to region and physical features. Nationalism is a belief that involves an individual identifying with, or becoming attached to, one's nation. For nationalism there is two category. One is civic nationalism which is also known as liberal nationalism. Civic nationalism defines the nation as an association of people who identify themselves as belonging to the nation. And the other one is ethnic nationalism which bases membership of the nation o descent of heredity. And in ethnic stratification, there are prejudice, discrimination, and institutionalized discrimination. First, prejudices are belief about the undesirable qualities of others. Discrimination is the differential treatment of others. And institutionalized discrimination is official discrimination encoded in law.

We discussed about prejudices we have. There are many examples of prejudice. First, we commonly think Asian are introverted but Western are extroverted. Also Korean think most of rich people have earned their money from disagreeable way. And women and Asians are not good at driving. Also people think products made in China will be easy to break. Furthermore there is prejudice which we learn in the lecture pink is girls' favorite color and blue is boys' favorite color.

  1. How is the Korean ethnic nationalism affecting the ethnic stratification of Korean society?

Korean people have a special ethnic nationalism compared to other countries. It is a one-ethnic nationalism. It is made because unlike other countries like America or Russia, the people of Korea is mostly composed of Han-ethnic group. Some other countries are composed of many different ethnic groups, since long ago. Because of this composition of a single-ethnic group, Korean people tend to have pride about the Han-ethnic group. This was not a problem in the past, because the single-ethnic composition was maintained without disturbance. But things changed recently at Korea. Korea now became a multiple-nationality country. This happened because South-East Asian woman came in to Korea to marry Korean man who couldn't find a bride in Korea. Koreans who had pride about the Han-ethnic group did not like this, and they made an ethnic stratification that sets those migrants in a lower position.

  2. Are the mixed-race children facing discrimination?

In Korea, the mixed-race children have different treatment depending on their looks. If the child dosen't have a look that matches the beauty standard of Korea, (mostly South-East Asian kids) there are discrimination to them. But if the child matches the beauty standard of Korea,(mostly mixed with the west) instead of discrimination, people expecially love those kid of mixed-races. The deviation between these two is very big.
