Sociology3- Lee Sung Won(이승원)

Topic1: Compared to world average, Korean people are not very religious, value hard work, value material, physical well being over more spiritual well being. Would you agree?

I think the four things suggested are partly right, but partly wrong.

First, Korea does not have a state religion like Turkey or Greece, so it could be right that Koreans are not religious. But referring to the fact that the largest church is in Korea, and the number of church that can be found in Korea, I feel that Koreans are a religious people. If you see Korean streets, you can find at least one red neon cross shining, sometimes 3 in one sight. Those crosses are churches. Really, there are insanely many churches in Korea.

Next, for the suggestion whether Koreans value hard work, I think it is an undeniable fact. But instead of ‘Koreans valuing hard work’, it would be more true that ‘Koreans are made to work hard.’

Third, I think it is true that Koreans value material, physical well being. There may be a correlation between them. I think Koreans value practical things, so valuing practical things may leaded them to prefer material and physical well being.

Topic2: Can we think of examples of cultures that were not tolerated in Korea in the past but became accepted in recent years?

Not so long ago, it was hard for Korean entertainers to talk about sexual issues in TV. But recently after a TV show named ‘Which-Hunt’, which is a show that talks about sexual issues, this topic became a general trend. Numerous shows were made similar to ‘Which-Hunt’, and it became more tolerate to talk about sexual issues.

  1. You said that compared to world average, Korean people value material physical well being over more spiritual well being because Koreans value practical things. According to your opinion, valuing practical things may leaded them to prefer material and physical well being. I want to know some examples supporting your argument- why Korean people value practical things compared to world average? In what way do practical things lead people to prefer materical and physical well being? I think valuing practical things affects partially valuing material, physical well being but I doubted whether it is a very strong or proper correlation. I think there are some people who value practical thing but value spiritual well being over material and physical well being. Let's discuss!! ^^

  2. I think your opinion about Topic 2 is very suitable. It was very rude to speak about sexual issues on TV. But now it is now available in many chanels. But there is still a little bit of social atmosphere that condemm this sexual issues on tv show is not suitable in korea. The witch hunt got punishment by korean broadcasting laws for several times. I think it will take times to adjust new culture
