What is Sociology 2 (안지영 Ji Young An)

On Monday our first topic was comparison of sociology and other disciplines. From lecture I learned economics, political science, anthropology, psychology, history, social work, and biology could be compared with sociology. And we debate about "What is more important-our genes or our environment?"

Absolutely both environment and genes are important. But I think environment is more important than genes. Because I think genes is just a tiny material that presents possibility of development but environment practically decides the way of development. So I think environment is more important than genes in terms of development.

Our second topic was history of sociology. We should study history because past helps us understand the present. So we learned people who contribute to sociology in the past. Comte, Spencer, Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Mead was influential people I learned from this lecture. In lecture I had two interesting people first was Comte and the other was Durkheim. Comte coined the word 'Sociology'. So people often called Comte as 'The father of sociology'. And Durkheim established the world's first course in sociology. And he defined sociology as a science about social facts. Also he stressed the importance of culture.

And we had second debate about "Can you think of examples of charismatic, traditional, and rational legal leaders or governments in the history of your own country?" I think in our country Sejongdaewang (세종대왕) is appropriate to this question. Before he's work called Hunminjeongeum only nobleman could read and write and commoner couldn't read and write. That means commoner's life was so unfortunate and tough. But from emergence of Hunminjeongeum commoners could also read and write. So because of his love for the people I think he is charismatic, traditional, and ration legal leader.
