What is sociology? (2) - Lim Ji Hyun (임지현)

MAIN TOPIC : WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY? (2)

Name : Lim Ji Hyun (임지현)

Date : March 9~10th, 2015

Topic 1.  what is more important - our genes or our environment

In this class, we talk about 'what is more important - our genes or our environment'. When I was asked about this topic, I think that our environment is more important than our genes. Because our environment is so powerful, so our genes are affected by our environment very much. For example, although someone was born with beauty genes, if he lives in a polluted environment, his skin becomes dirty and his height doesn't grow taller and taller, and so on. Also, although someone has intelligent genes, if he lives with less-educated parents(parents can become environment, too.), he can't learn about high quality knowledge, so his intelligent genes decline. And although someone is healthy, if he smokes, his healthy body becomes unhealthy and dangerous. In other words, our environment exert a strong influence on many things in our life and can change our genes, so our environment is very important in our life and more important than our genes.

Topic 2. Can you think of examples of charismatic, traditional and rational legal leaders or governments in the history of your own country?

We talk about examples of charismatic, traditional and rational legal leaders or governments in the history of our own country. As soon as we were asked the question about Topic 2, we hit upon one person. He is King Sejong who was the fourth king of Joseon-dynasty Korea. The first reason is that he created Korea own language called 'Hangul'. If he didn't create 'Hangul', maybe... today, we can't speak proud of our own language and we may still talk Japanese or Chinese. But thanks to King Sejong, Korea people can have our own language and self-esteem. The second reason is King Sejong's patriotism. He loved our own country, Korea, and I think that he still loves Korea. And in Korea's confused time, King Sejong strengthened royal authority and Korean military, so Korea people could restore peace and quiet. Also he developed science and technoloy(ex. Nongsa jikseol, Cheugugi...), so in Joseon-dynasty, knowledges of  science and technoloy prosper. So, I think that King Sejong is the example of charismatic, traditional and rational legal leaders in the history of my own country. And I think that I am proud of being Korean, also I am happy because thanks to this class, I can think about King Sejong one more time.

  1. I also think that King Sejong is charismatic leader. Not only he is a charismatic leader but also he loved the his people so much.
